deFlattening explores the relationship between the popular and the superficial.

The series looks at how trends, icons and mainstream imagery can carry emotional, cultural and personal value beyond their immediate appearance. It is interested in the space between what is instantly recognisable and what slowly reveals itself over time.

At first, the works appear bright, precise and almost digital, using bold flat colours and iconic shapes to echo the visual language of screens. Seen up close, however, that clarity begins to shift. Handmade textures, small irregularities and physical imperfections become visible, revealing the human presence behind the image.
